About Indios: Land and People
Indios covers about 4.78 square miles of land. It also has a small area of water, about 0.53 square miles. In 2010, the community had 2,647 residents. This means there were about 553 people living in each square mile.
Over the years, the number of people living in Indios has changed. For example, in 1910, there were 411 residents. By 1950, the population had grown to 1,839 people. In 2010, it reached 2,647.
A Look Back: Indios' History
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of the people in Puerto Rico. They found that Indios barrio and a nearby community called Boca had a combined population of 782 people.
Earthquakes in 2019-2020
Indios was near the center of a series of earthquakes. These earthquakes started on December 28, 2019. They continued into January 2020.
During this time, there were 11 earthquakes that were stronger than a magnitude 5. One was even a magnitude 6.4. More than 300 smaller earthquakes also happened. These were all stronger than a magnitude 3.
