Indra Bahadur Rai (born February 3, 1927 – died March 6, 2018) was an important Indian writer. He wrote in the Nepali language. He was also a literary critic from Darjeeling, India.
During his life, he wrote many essays, short stories, and novels. He also wrote literary criticism. Some of his most famous stories are Kheer and Raat Bhari Huri Chalyo. He helped start a new literary movement called Tesro Aayam (Third Dimension). He worked with Ishwar Ballav and Bairagi Kainla on this. In 1977, he won the first ever Sahitya Akademi Award for Nepali language.

About Indra Bahadur Rai
Indra Bahadur Rai went to school in Kurseong and Darjeeling. He earned his first degree from Calcutta University. Later, he got a master's degree in English from North Bengal University.
He taught English at Turnbull High School in Darjeeling for many years. He also worked as a professor of English at St. Joseph's College, Darjeeling. Besides teaching, he was also the Vice Chairman of Darjeeling Municipality.
His Literary Journey
I.B. Rai began his writing career around 1950. He started by publishing literary reviews in various journals. These included Aadhar, Bharati, Diyo, Diyalo, and Roop Rekha.
His first novel, Aaja Ramita Cha, came out in 1964. Before that, he started writing short stories. His very first story was published in 1959. His first book, Vipana Katipaya, was a collection of thirty short stories. It was published in 1960. This book had a big impact on Nepali literature, especially on how short stories were written.
The Tesro Aayam Movement
From 1963 onwards, Indra Bahadur Rai became a key figure in the "dimensional literature" movement. This movement is known as Aayameli Andolan in Nepali literature history. He, along with Ishwor Ballav and Bairagi Kainla, explored new ideas in Nepali literature. They successfully added a "third dimension" – Tesro Aayam – to Nepali writing. This made their works unique and deeper.
His Impact and Awards
Indra Bahadur Rai is one of the most famous modern writers in Nepali literature. Many universities in India include his major works in their Nepali language courses. He wrote actively for over 60 years.
He received several important awards for his writing. These include the Sahitya Akademi Award for his work Nepali Upanyaska Adharharu. He also won the Jagadambashri Puraskar and the Agam Singh Giri Smriti Puraskar. Rai was a very versatile writer. He used many different writing styles. His works combined both old and new techniques. He wrote about many topics, from small personal thoughts to big historical events. Each piece of his writing was strong and unique.
Some of his short stories were translated into English in 2009. This collection was titled Gorkhas Imagined: Indra Bahadur Rai in Translation.

Personal Life
Indra Bahadur Rai was married to Maya Devi Rai. She passed away on August 27, 2017. They had three children together: one son and two daughters. He died on March 6, 2018, in Darjeeling.
