Biography
Indra Lesmana grew up in a home filled with music. His father, Jack Lesmana, was a famous jazz guitarist. His mother, Nien Lesmana, was a singer. Indra started playing the piano when he was just nine years old. A year later, he was already playing in his father's band! He also studied music at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music in Australia.
In 1981, Indra and his father formed a band called the Jack and Indra Lesmana Quartet. They recorded an album in Indonesia called Children of Fantasy. When Indra went back to Australia, he started another band with the same name, playing Latin jazz fusion music.
Later, in 1982, he formed a band called Nebula. They released an album called No Standing. Indra wrote four of the songs on this album. In 1983, he joined another modern jazz band called Women and Children First. They also recorded their first album that year.
A record company called Zebra, which was part of MCA Records, signed Indra. They released No Standing as his first solo album. This album was even improved by a famous sound engineer named Bernie Grundman before it was released in the U.S.
Indra moved to California in 1985. There, he recorded another album called For Earth and Heaven in 1986. Some of his songs, like "No Standing" and "Stephanie," even made it onto the Billboard magazine jazz chart. In 2002, he started a big band with 17 musicians. He also wrote music for a movie soundtrack called Rumah Ke Tujuh. His sister, Mira Lesmana, produced this film.
Audio Engineering
Indra Lesmana is also very interested in how music sounds. He started working as a sound designer for his album Tragedi in 1984. In 1998, he produced an album called Sabda Prana for the band Java Jazz.
In 1999, he decided to open his own studio. This studio focused on mixing and mastering jazz music. Mixing means blending all the different sounds in a song together. Mastering is the final step to make the music sound perfect for release. He has worked on over 20 albums for many Indonesian artists. These include famous names like Andien and Maliq & D'Essentials. He was even nominated for an award for Best Mixing Engineer in 2003 for his work on the Rumah Ke Tujuh soundtrack.
Other Work
In early 2004, Indra and his wife, Hanny Trihandojo Lesmana, along with Aksan Syuman, started a weekly program. This program helped young people in South Jakarta learn about music and dance.
In March 2004, Indra became a judge on the TV show Indonesian Idol. This show helps find new singing talents. He was also a judge on the first Asian Idol competition, which was held in Indonesia.
