Alonso of Spain (born September 22, 1611 – died September 16, 1612) was a young Spanish prince, known as an infante. He sadly passed away when he was just a baby.

Early Life of Prince Alonso

Prince Alonso was born at the Monastery of El Escorial in Spain. His parents were Philip III of Spain, the King of Spain, and Margaret of Austria, the Queen.

He was the eighth and last child of the royal couple. Sadly, his mother, Queen Margaret, died just a few days after he was born. Because of this sad event, Prince Alonso was given the nickname El Caro, which means "the Dear" or "the Costly". People called him Don Alonso el Caro during his short life.

His Royal Baptism

Prince Alonso was baptized at the same monastery where he was born. This special event took place on October 8, 1611. It was the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi.

His baptism was a quiet affair, not a big public celebration. This was because his mother had recently passed away. His older siblings, Anne and Philip, were his godparents. The ceremony was led by Diego de Guzmán, a high-ranking church official. Prince Philip Emmanuel of Savoy, his cousin, carried him to the baptismal font.

The name Alonso, or Alfonso, was chosen to honor the ancient kings of Castile.

Resting Place

Prince Alonso died before his first birthday. He was laid to rest at the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

His tomb is in a special part of the monastery called the Panteón of Infantes. This area is often called the "nursery mausoleum" because many young princes and princesses are buried there. His tomb has a Latin inscription that reads:

ALPHONSVS, PHILIPPI III FILIVS

This means "Alfonso, Son of Philip III". His father, King Philip III, accepted the loss of his young son with sadness, just as he had accepted the death of his wife, Queen Margaret, a year earlier.
