What is the Information Commons?
The Information Commons is a modern building designed for students and staff at the University of Sheffield. It helps them study, research, and use computers. It's a key place for learning and getting work done on campus.
Opening the IC
The Information Commons first opened its doors on 10 April 2007 for university students and staff. A few months later, on 26 September 2007, it had its official opening ceremony. This event was led by Harsh Srivastav, who was a student at the university and also the former President of the Students Union.
The idea for the IC came from two main parts of the university: the University Library and the Corporate Information and Computing Services (CiCS). They work together to run the building.
Who Can Use the IC?
The Information Commons is mainly for students and staff of the University of Sheffield. It's a place where they can study, use computers, and find books. It's open to them all day, every day of the year.

The Information Commons is always looking for new ways to help students learn.
Digital Commons Space
Since 2016, the IC has been home to the University's Digital Commons. This is a special area where people work together to create new and exciting ways to learn using technology. It's all about making "Digital Learning" better.
Recent Changes
In the summer of 2017, the Information Commons was temporarily closed. This was so that the inside of the building could be updated and improved. It reopened in September 2017 with a new look and layout.
