Ingalls is a small community in Payne County, Oklahoma. It is located about 9 miles (14 km) east of Stillwater. The town began in 1889 during a special event called the "Unassigned Lands" land run. It was named after Senator John J. Ingalls from Kansas. Ingalls had a post office from January 22, 1890, until October 31, 1907. In the 1890s, about 150 people lived there, but the population later became smaller.

History of Ingalls

Ingalls was usually a quiet place. However, it became famous for a big event called the Battle of Ingalls. This happened on September 1, 1893. It was a shootout between U.S. Marshals and a group of outlaws known as the Doolin-Dalton gang.

Post Office and Name Changes

Later, a new post office was started on June 21, 1921. It was slightly northwest of the old Ingalls townsite. This new post office was named Signet, Oklahoma. It became part of a new community. However, the people living in the Ingalls area did not like this change. They protested, and the name was officially changed back to Ingalls after the Signet post office closed.

Today's Ingalls Community

Today, only a few old, empty buildings remain at the Signet site. These include copies of the Ingalls Hotel, which was actually called the Pierce O.K. Hotel. There are also replicas of a livery stable, a saloon, and a general store. At the original Ingalls site, there is a community building. This building was once the Ingalls School in the mid-20th century. Many new and old homes are also there, where families who have lived in the community for many generations still reside.
