Inge Johan Lønning (born February 20, 1938 – died March 24, 2013) was an important Norwegian person. He was a professor who studied religion and also a politician for the Conservative Party.

He worked at the University of Oslo, where he was a professor of theology. He even became the head of the university, called a Rector, from 1985 to 1992. In politics, he was a member of the Norwegian Parliament (the Storting). He also held important roles like Vice President of the Parliament and leader of the Nordic Council, which helps countries in Northern Europe work together.

Inge Lønning was born in Fana, a place near Bergen in Norway. His father was Per Lønning and his mother was Anna Gurine Strømø. He also had an older brother named Per Lønning, who became a bishop.

Education and Early Career

Inge Lønning studied at the University of Oslo. He earned his degree in theology in 1962. Theology is the study of religious beliefs and practices. After his degree, he continued to study and research. He even served in the military for a year as a chaplain in the Norwegian Navy. A chaplain is like a religious leader for soldiers.

In 1971, he earned his doctorate in theology. This is a very high academic degree. In the same year, he became a professor of systematic theology at the University of Oslo. He taught there for many years.

Leading the University

In 1985, Inge Lønning was chosen to be the Rector of the University of Oslo. The Rector is like the president or head of a university. He held this important position until 1992. Even while he was Rector, he continued to be a professor of theology. He retired from teaching in 2008.

Political Life

Inge Lønning also had a long career in politics. In 1971, he was elected to the city council in Oslo. He also served on the city's board of education.

Later, he became a member of the Norwegian Parliament. He was elected for three terms, from 1997 to 2009. During his time in Parliament, he held several important jobs. He was the Vice President of the Storting from 2001 to 2005. He also became the President of the Lagting, which was an important part of the Norwegian Parliament at the time.

In 2003, he was the president of the Nordic Council. This council helps countries in Northern Europe, like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland, work together on different issues.

Awards and Recognition

Inge Lønning received special honors from universities outside Norway. He was given honorary doctorates from Luther College in the USA and Åbo Akademi University in Finland. He was also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, which is a group of top scientists and scholars in Norway.

His Passing

Inge Lønning passed away on March 24, 2013. He became ill while he was cross-country skiing at Beitostølen, a popular place for winter sports in Norway.
