Dame Ingrid Mary Roscoe (born May 27, 1944 – died June 28, 2020) was an important writer about English art. She was also the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire from 2004 to 2018.
The Lord Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. It's a special role that involves supporting the Royal Family and helping with local events.

About Ingrid Roscoe
Ingrid Roscoe was born in 1944 in Rugby School, Warwickshire. Her mother later married Kenneth Hargreaves. He was also a Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, serving from 1974 to 1978. This meant Ingrid followed in her stepfather's footsteps! Ingrid had eight grandchildren and supported many different groups.
Her Studies and Work
Ingrid Roscoe started studying English at the University of Nottingham. However, she left to marry Marshall Roscoe when she was 19. They had three children together.
Later, she went back to university. She studied at the University of Leeds. In 1985, she earned a degree in Fine Art and Cultural Studies. Then, in 1990, she completed her PhD. Her special research was about an artist named Peter Scheemakers.
After finishing her studies, Ingrid Roscoe stayed at Leeds University. In the 1990s, she taught about British Sculpture.
Awards and Special Roles
Ingrid Roscoe received many special awards and honours during her life.
Becoming Lord Lieutenant
In 1994, she became a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of West Yorkshire. This is a step towards becoming a Lord Lieutenant. In 2004, she made history. She became the first female Lord Lieutenant in the north of England. She served in this important role until she retired in 2018.
Academic Honours
- In 1993, she became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA). This is a group for people interested in history and old things.
- The University of Huddersfield gave her an Honorary degree in 2007. It was called a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL).
- In 2008, Leeds Beckett University also gave her an Honorary degree. This one was a Doctor of Laws (LL.D).
- The University of Leeds gave her another Doctor of Laws (LL.D) degree in 2010.
- In 2014, she received an Honorary Fellowship from Bradford College.
Royal Honours
- In 2012, she was made a Dame of Justice of the Order of St John (D.StJ). This is a special honour from a very old charity.
- In 2017, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (DCVO). This is a high honour given by the King or Queen for personal service.
Other Roles
Ingrid Roscoe also served as the Honorary Colonel of the University of Leeds Officers' Training Corps. This group helps university students learn about the military.
