Injilarija facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Injilarija people were an Aboriginal Australian group. They lived in Queensland, south of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Their lands were east of the Waanyi people, south of the Nguburinji people, and west of the Mingginda people. Sadly, the Injilarija people are now considered extinct.

History of the Injilarija People

The 1880s brought big changes to the Gulf Country where the Injilarija lived. This was a time of a "pastoral boom." This means many settlers arrived with large numbers of cattle and sheep. They quickly took over the land for their farms and ranches.

Impact of Settlement on Injilarija Lands

The arrival of these settlers had a very harsh effect on the Aboriginal peoples of the Gulf Country. Their traditional lands were taken over, which greatly disrupted their way of life. For example, one large cattle station was set up at Lawn Hill, which was part of Injilarija territory.

Land Succession and National Park

Today, some of the traditional lands of the Injilarija people are part of the Boodjamulla National Park. This park includes the Lawn Hill area in the Shire of Burke. Around 1880, after the Injilarija people were considered extinct, their lands were taken over by the Waanyi people. This happened through a process called "right of succession," which is similar to how land rights can be passed on.
