The Injinoo are an Aboriginal Australian people from the Cape York Peninsula. Today, the name Injinoo refers to a group of different Aboriginal communities who came together in this area.

Who are the Injinoo People?

The Injinoo people are made up of different groups. These groups moved from their original lands because of new settlements. They came to this area and intermarried with the Injinoo. Over time, they formed a new, shared identity as Injinoo people.

Their Traditional Lands

The traditional lands of the Injinoo Community are very large. They stretch from the Skardon River on the west coast. On the east coast, they go up to Captain Billy's Landing. The land continues all the way to Pajinka, which is at the very top of Cape York.

A Shared History

In the early 1900s, several Aboriginal groups made their homes on Injinoo land. These groups are now known as the Red Island, Seven Rivers, and MacDonald River peoples.

The Red Island people are from the east coast. They are descendants of the Gudang and Yadhaigana peoples. Some Wuthathi people are also part of this group. They, along with the Seven Rivers group, created a community at Small River. This place is also called Injinoo-Cowal Creek.

The MacDonald River people are from the Gumathi group. They live in a special type of community. This is called a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) area. This means the land is held in trust for the community.

Communities Today

There are five main communities located on the traditional country of the Injinoo peoples. These are in the Northern Peninsula Area Region of Cape York Peninsula. The communities are:
