Ink is a fascinating ghost town located in Shannon County, Missouri, in the United States. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy community but is now mostly empty, with few or no people living there. Ink sits where Missouri Route N and county road 328 meet. It's found on the north side of Spring Valley Creek, close to the Sunklands Conservation Area.

The Story of Ink, Missouri

Ink was once a small, active community. It even had its own post office! This post office opened in 1885. It served the people of Ink for many years, finally closing its doors in 1954.

How Ink Got Its Name

The name "Ink" is quite unusual for a town. There's a fun story about how it got its name. People in the community had tried to pick a name many times, but the postal authorities kept saying no. So, they held a special meeting to decide.

Someone brought a children's spelling book to the meeting. It had short, simple words like "cat," "bat," and "dog." The meeting went on for a long time. Suddenly, someone accidentally spilled an ink well all over the book and table! Another person at the meeting saw the spilled ink and jokingly suggested, "Why not call the town Ink?"

Surprisingly, the U.S. postal authorities liked the name. They found it acceptable, and that's how the village officially became known as Ink. While this story is popular, some people think the town might have just been named Ink because it was a short and easy name to remember.
