The Tower's Story
What is the Innishannon Tower?
Innishannon has two active churches today. But near the River Bandon, you can find the old St. Mary's church and its graveyard. This church is no longer used. The tower is a part of this old church.
A Look at Its History
The St. Mary's church might have started as a Cistercian monastery long ago. Cistercians were a group of Christian monks. Over time, it became a Church of Ireland building. It was used until a new church was built in the mid-1800s.
Saving the Tower
The Church of Ireland gave the land with the old church to Cork County Council. In 2007, a big part of the tower fell down. Local people really wanted the tower to be fixed. They started a campaign to save it.
Their efforts worked! On November 21, 2013, Cork County Council officially gave the care of St. Mary's Church tower to the local Tidy Towns committee. This committee helps keep towns neat and beautiful. Now, they look after this important historical ruin.
