The River Bandon is a beautiful river located in County Cork, Ireland. Its name comes from an old word, ban-dea, which means "goddess." This river starts high up in the Shehy Mountains at a place called Nowen Hill.

The River Bandon flows for about 72 kilometers (45 miles). It begins near Drimoleague and then travels through several towns and villages. These include Dunmanway, Ballineen and Enniskean, and Bandon town. Finally, it reaches Innishannon and Kilmacsimon before emptying into Kinsale Harbour on Ireland's southern coast. Many smaller streams, like the Sally River and the Bridewell River, join the Bandon along its journey.

Fishing for Atlantic Salmon

The River Bandon is very well known for its amazing Atlantic salmon fishing. People come from all over to try and catch these large fish. One of the biggest salmon ever caught in Ireland since 1991 was found here.

This record-breaking salmon was caught by Bill Canning on July 7, 2008. It weighed a huge 12.8 kilograms (28 pounds and 3 ounces)! You can even see this impressive fish on display at the Munster Arms hotel in Bandon town.

Understanding River Floods

Rivers can sometimes overflow their banks, causing floods. This happened to the River Bandon on November 19 and 20, 2009. The water rose very high, causing a lot of damage in Bandon town and other areas along the river. It was the first time in many years that the river had flooded so badly.

In December 2015, Bandon experienced more flooding. This was due to two big storms, Storm Desmond and Storm Frank, which brought a lot of rain. Understanding why rivers flood helps us prepare for and manage these events.
