The International Tenerife Memorial March 27, 1977 is a special monument. It was built to remember the 583 people who lost their lives in a very sad plane accident. This accident happened at the Tenerife airport on March 27, 1977. The memorial is on a hill called Mesa Mota, near the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This city is on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. From the memorial, you can see the airport (now called Tenerife North Airport). On clear days, you can even see the famous Mount Teide.
The memorial was officially opened on March 27, 2007. This was exactly 30 years after the accident. Many family members of the victims were there for the opening. The monument looks like a spiral staircase. Its steps seem to connect the ground to the sky. This tall structure is about 18 meters (59 feet) high. A talented Dutch artist named Ruud van de Wint designed it.
