Ira is a small, unincorporated community in Scurry County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's found in the southwestern part of Scurry County, where State Highway 350 and Farm to Market Road 1606 meet. Ira is about 10 miles southwest of a larger town called Snyder. In 2000, about 250 people lived there.
History of Ira
The story of Ira began in the early 1890s. A man named Ira Green opened a general store in the area. This store quickly became an important spot. It was a meeting point for stagecoaches and mail delivery. Because of this, a small community started to grow around the store.
A school for children opened in 1893. Three years later, in 1896, Ira Green became the postmaster when the community got its own post office. Ira grew a lot in the early 1900s.
Later, the number of people living in Ira changed over time. In 1980, about 485 residents called Ira home. By 1990, this number had almost dropped by half. In 2000, the community had about 250 residents.
Education in Ira
The community of Ira has its own school system. It is served by the Ira Independent School District. Students in Ira attend Ira High School, where their sports teams are known as the Bulldogs.
