Irene Vallejo's Work
Irene Vallejo has a special degree called a "doctorate" in classical philology. This means she deeply studied ancient languages like Latin and Greek, and the old texts written in them. Her work often explores how ancient writers and their ideas connect with our world today.
She has written articles for Spanish newspapers like Heraldo de Aragón and El País. In these articles, she combines discussions about ancient authors with current events. Some of these articles were later put together into books.
El Infinito en un Junco
In 2020, Irene Vallejo won a big award called the Premio Nacional de Literatura en la modalidad de Ensayo (National Prize of Literature for Essays) for her book El Infinito en un Junco. This book was published in English in 2022 with the title Papyrus. She was the fifth woman to win this important prize since it started in 1975.
In 2021, she also received the Premio Aragón. This is the highest honor given by the government of Aragon, her home region.
El Infinito en un Junco tells the amazing story of how books and reading began in the ancient world. It explains how these activities shaped life back then and how their effects are still felt today. The book received great reviews from English-speaking newspapers like The Guardian and was even featured on The Economist's list of best books in 2022.
