Irene Vallejo Moreu, born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1979, is a Spanish writer, historian, and philologist. A philologist studies languages and texts, especially ancient ones.

Irene Vallejo's Career

Irene Vallejo has a special degree called a PhD in classical philology. She earned this from the University of Zaragoza and the University of Florence. Her work often explores ancient writers and how their ideas connect to our world today.

Early Writings and Articles

Irene's first book was a study about words used in literature by the Roman poet Martial. She also writes articles for Spanish newspapers like Heraldo de Aragón and El País. In these articles, she talks about old writers and links their stories to current events. Some of these articles were later put together into two books: El pasado que te espera and Alguien habló de nosotros.

Famous Book: El Infinito en un Junco

In 2020, Irene Vallejo won a big award called the Premio Nacional de Literatura en la modalidad de Ensayo. This is the National Prize of Literature for Essays. She won it for her book El Infinito en un Junco, which means "Infinity in a Reed." This book was published in English as Papyrus in 2022.

Irene was the fifth woman to win this important prize since it started in 1975. The book tells the amazing story of how books and reading began in the ancient world. It shows how these activities shaped the past and still affect us today. In 2021, she also received the Premio Aragón, which is the highest award from the government of Aragon.

Other Books and Children's Stories

Irene Vallejo also writes fiction and books for children. In 2011, she published her first novel, La Luz Sepultada. This story takes place in Zaragoza in 1936, just before the Spanish Civil War. Her second novel, El Silbido del Arquero, came out in 2015.

She has written two children's books as well. One is called El Inventor de Viajes, with pictures by José Luis Cano. The other is La Leyenda de las Mareas Mansas, which she created with the painter Lina Vila.
