Her Life and Career
Irm Hermann was born in Munich, Germany. After finishing school, she worked as a publishing clerk. This meant she helped prepare books and magazines for printing. Later, she worked as a secretary for a company called ADAC.
In 1966, she met director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. He saw her talent and convinced her to leave her job to work with him. She started acting in his short film The City Tramp that same year. Irm Hermann went on to act in 19 of Fassbinder's films. These included The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972).
She often played characters who were a bit frustrated or old-fashioned. Her biggest role for Fassbinder was Irmgard Epp in The Merchant of Four Seasons (1971). This role earned her the Deutscher Filmpreis award. She was a close part of Fassbinder's group of friends and colleagues. Their working relationship was sometimes difficult, but she became one of his trusted friends.
In the mid-1970s, Irm Hermann moved to Berlin. Her acting career really took off there. She worked with many other directors like Werner Herzog and Christoph Schlingensief. In 1982, she played Else Gebel in Percy Adlon's film Fünf letzte Tage. This role won her another Deutscher Filmpreis in 1983.
Irm Hermann also enjoyed acting in comedies. She appeared in films like Loriot's Pappa Ante Portas (1991). She even played a fictional version of Queen Elizabeth II in Hape Kerkeling's Willi und die Windzors (1996). Her film Paradiso: Seven Days with Seven Women (2000) won an award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
She acted in over 160 films and TV shows until 2018. She also performed on stage at famous theaters in Berlin, like the Volksbühne.
Irm Hermann was married to Dietmar Roberg, who wrote children's books. They had two sons together, named Franz Tizian and Fridolin. Irm Hermann passed away in Berlin on May 26, 2020, at the age of 77. Her agent said she had been sick for a short time.
