Irma Patricia Aguayo, also known as Patricia Aguayo, is a talented artist who paints murals, especially at Chicano Park. She has also been an activist for a long time, working to make things better for her community. She was born and grew up in San Diego, California. Her parents came from Mexico, so she grew up in a home rich with Mexican culture. However, her parents told her to act "American" outside their home to succeed.
When she was in middle school, she met her counselor, Ms. Barrios. Ms. Barrios was the first person of Mexican descent Aguayo heard call herself a Chicana. This made Aguayo realize that she also identified as Chicana. After looking for Chicana artists, she noticed there weren't many. So, she decided to create her own artwork.
Aguayo started painting when she was 14 years old. She often used many shades of brown in her art. In her 20s, she had a full-time job but felt stuck. She decided to quit and work part-time instead, so she could focus on her art. After asking many times, she was allowed to help restore a temporary mural at Chicano Park in San Diego. This project earned her the title of muralist. She continues to paint at Chicano Park and works on public art projects with people from different cultures. Today, she is a part of the Chicano Park Steering Committee, which helps guide the park's future.
