Isaac L. Anderson (1780–1857) was an important American Presbyterian minister. He is best known for starting a school in 1819. This school later became Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. He helped many young people get an education.

Early Life and Education

Isaac Anderson was born on March 26, 1780. His birthplace was Rockbridge County, Virginia. He learned to read and spell from his grandmother. After that, he went to a traditional log school house. Later, he attended Liberty Hall Academy. This school is now known as Washington and Lee University. It is located in Lexington, Virginia.

Becoming a Minister

When Isaac was 17 years old, he joined the church. At age 21, he moved with his family. They settled in Knox County, Tennessee. On November 26, 1802, he became a minister. This happened at the "Washington Meeting House." This church is now called Washington Presbyterian Church. By 1807, the church had 72 members. Reverend Anderson served as the pastor there. He continued until 1812.

Founding Maryville College

In 1812, Reverend Anderson moved to Maryville, Tennessee. He became the pastor at New Providence Presbyterian Church. He had a big dream to educate future ministers. In 1819, he founded the Southern and Western Theological Seminary. This school was very important for the region. In 1842, the seminary changed its name. It became Maryville College. Today, Maryville College is a well-known school.

Later Life and Legacy

Isaac Anderson passed away on January 28, 1857. He was first buried in the New Providence cemetery. In 1933, his remains were moved. He was reburied in the Maryville College cemetery. His work helped shape education and religion in Tennessee. He is remembered for his dedication.
