History of Rockford
Rockford got its name from a special place where people could cross the Little River. This crossing was called a 'ford.' In the early 1800s, settlers and merchants used this rocky ford to travel between Knoxville and Maryville. It was called 'Rocky Ford' because it had many rocks, which made it easier to cross than other muddy parts of the river.
Since the 1900s, Rockford has been home to the Rockford Manufacturing Company. This factory made cordage, which is like strong rope or twine. The factory used a special low dam on the Little River to power its machines. Today, this dam is no longer used for power.
Rockford officially became a city in the early 1970s. This happened so it wouldn't be taken over by nearby cities like Alcoa or Maryville, which were growing quickly.
