What is the Central Plaza Like?
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, each town has a central plaza. This main square is usually surrounded by important buildings. These include the city hall and a Catholic church.
The Plaza's Purpose
The central plaza is a lively spot for everyone. People gather here for fun events and to socialize. It is a place where friends and families can meet. The plaza is busy from morning until night.
Old Spanish laws, called the Laws of the Indies, set rules for towns. These laws said the plaza should be big enough for celebrations. They also said nearby streets should have covered walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
The Church in Isabel II
Right across from the central plaza in Isabel II is a Catholic church. It is called the Parroquia Inmaculada Concepción. This church was first built a long time ago, in 1844.
A Brief History of Isabel II
Isabel II was once part of Spain's official records. But after the Spanish–American War, things changed. Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that Isabel II and Florida barrios had 2,646 people together.
More recently, in July 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided money. These funds were for repairing the main plaza in Vieques.
