María Isabel Riquelme de la Barrera y Meza (1758 – April 21, 1839) was an important woman in Chilean history. She is best known as the mother of Bernardo O'Higgins, who became a key leader in Chile's fight for independence. Isabel Riquelme had roots in the Basque region of Spain.
She was born in Chillán, a city in Chile. She was the second daughter of Simón Riquelme de la Barrera y Goycochea and María Mercedes de Mesa y Ulloa. When she was 19, she had a son, Bernardo, with Ambrosio O'Higgins, Marquis of Osorno. He was much older and later became the viceroy of Peru.
Family Life
Isabel Riquelme married twice during her life. Her first marriage was in 1780 to Félix Rodríguez y Rojas. They had a daughter named Rosa Rodríguez y Riquelme, born in Chillán in 1781. Sadly, her first husband passed away in 1782.
Later, Isabel married her second husband, Manuel de Puga y Figueroa. With him, she had another daughter named Maria de las Nieves de Puga y Riquelme in 1793.
