Isabel's Family Background
Isabel was born around 1320. She grew up with nine older brothers and sisters. One of her brothers was John de Beaumont, who became the 2nd Lord Beaumont. Her family was well-known and connected to many important people. Her grandparents on her father's side were Louis and Agnes de Beaumont. On her mother's side, her grandparents were Alexander Comyn, Sheriff of Aberdeen and Joan le Latimer.
Marriage and Royal Connections
In 1337, Isabel married Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster. He was a very powerful and important noble in England. Together, Isabel and Henry had two daughters. These daughters would later inherit all of their father's lands and wealth.
Their daughters were:
- Maud, Countess of Leicester (born 1339, died 1362). She married William V, Count of Hainaut. Maud did not have any children who lived to inherit from her.
- Blanche of Lancaster (born 1345, died 1368). She married John of Gaunt, who was a son of King Edward III of England. Blanche had three children who survived. After her sister Maud died, Blanche inherited all of her father's large estates.
Through her daughter Blanche, Isabel became an ancestor of the House of Lancaster. This was a very important royal family in England. Her grandson, Henry IV of England, later became King of England. Her other grandchildren included Philippa of Lancaster, who became Queen of Portugal, and Elizabeth of Lancaster.
Her Final Years
Isabel de Beaumont died in 1361 at Leicester Castle. She passed away from the plague, a terrible illness that spread across Europe. She was buried in Newark Abbey in Leicester. Her husband, Henry of Grosmont, also died from the plague in March of the same year.
