Isabella Glyn (born May 22, 1823 – died May 18, 1889) was a famous actress from the Victorian era. She was especially known for acting in plays by Shakespeare.

Life as an Actress

Isabella Glyn was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 22, 1823. She first appeared on stage in Manchester on November 8, 1847. Her role was Constance in Shakespeare's play King John.

Soon after, she made her first appearance in London. This was at the Olympic Theatre on January 28, 1848. She played the famous character Lady Macbeth. From 1848 to 1851, she performed at Sadler's Wells Theatre. She also started giving public readings of Shakespeare's works in September 1851.

Later Career and Readings

Isabella Glyn continued to perform in many important theaters. On December 26, 1851, she appeared at Drury Lane as Bianca in the play Fazio. She also performed at St. James' in 1854 and the Standard Theatre in 1855.

She returned to Sadler's Wells Theatre in 1859 and performed at Princess's Theatre in 1867. Isabella Glyn traveled to Boston in 1870 to give recitals. She gave more Shakespearean readings in London at Steinway Hall and St. James' in 1878 and 1879. Later in her career, she became a theater instructor. She was known for following the acting style of the famous Kemble family. Her picture often appeared in popular magazines during her lifetime.

Personal Life

Isabella Glyn was married two times. Her first marriage was to Edward Wills. This marriage was short because her husband passed away.

Her second marriage was to Eneas Sweetland Dallas. He was a well-known journalist for The Times newspaper. They were married in Glasgow in December 1853. They had a second wedding ceremony in London in July 1855. Their marriage later ended in 1874.

Death

Isabella Glyn died on May 18, 1889, in London. She was almost 66 years old. She was buried on May 22, 1889, at Kensal Green Cemetery.
