Life of Queen Isabella
Early Life and Family
Isabella was the eighth child of King James I of Aragon. Her mother was Violant of Hungary. She was born around 1247 or early 1248. She was the youngest daughter in her family.
Marriage to Philip III
In 1258, an important agreement was made. It was called the Treaty of Corbeil. This treaty was between Isabella's father and King Louis IX of France. As part of this agreement, Isabella was promised in marriage to Louis IX's second son, Philip.
Their wedding took place on May 28, 1262. It was held in the city of Clairmont, which is now Clermont-Ferrand. By this time, Philip was already the next in line to the French throne. His older brother, Louis, had passed away in 1260.
Becoming Queen of France
In July 1270, Isabella joined her husband and father-in-law on a journey. They went on the Eighth Crusade to Tunis. A crusade was a religious military expedition.
The next month, King Louis IX died. This meant Isabella became the new Queen of France.
Tragic End
On their way back home, in January 1271, Isabella had a terrible accident. She fell from her horse while crossing a river in Italy. She was six months pregnant at the time. Sadly, she gave birth too early to a son, who died soon after.
Isabella was very weak and had a fever. She passed away on January 28, 1271, at the age of 24. Her husband, King Philip III, was very sad about her death.
Because she died far from home, her body was prepared for a long journey. She was first buried in Italy with her newborn son. Later, she was buried in the royal burial place in France, the Basilica of St Denis. Her tomb was later damaged during the French Revolution in 1793.
Children of Isabella
Isabella and Philip III had several children:
- Louis (1264–1276): He was expected to become king after his father.
- Philip IV (1268–1314): He later became King of France.
- Robert (1269–1271)
- Charles, Count of Valois (1270–1325)
- A son who was born too early and did not survive (1271)
