The Ischnura pruinescens is a type of damselfly. It belongs to a family of insects called Coenagrionidae. People often call it the colourful bluetail because of its bright colors. Experts have checked on this damselfly. They say it is not in danger of disappearing. It is listed as "least concern" on the IUCN Red List.

What Does the Colourful Bluetail Look Like?

The colourful bluetail is a small to medium-sized damselfly. Its wings can spread about 35 to 50 millimeters wide. That's about the length of a few paperclips!

Male Damselflies

Adult male damselflies have a special powdery coating. It looks like a frosty layer on their upper body. This part is called the synthorax. Some of their tail section (abdomen) also has this coating.

Female Damselflies

Female damselflies look a bit different. They have bright yellow or orange colors on their synthorax and legs. The underside of their abdomen is a pale green. They also have cool blue markings on the eighth and ninth parts of their abdomen.

Where Do Colourful Bluetails Live?

You can find the colourful bluetail in Australia and New Guinea. In Australia, they live in the northeastern part of the continent. This area stretches from the Gold Coast all the way up to the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. They also live west into the tropical areas of the Northern Territory.

What Kind of Places Do They Like?

The colourful bluetail loves to live near fresh water. You can find them in places like pools, lakes, ponds, and swamps. These watery spots are perfect homes for them.
