Ishod Wair's Skateboarding Journey
Starting Out in New Jersey
Ishod Wair grew up in Bordentown, New Jersey. He first hopped on a skateboard when he was nine years old. At first, he also played other sports like basketball. But soon, skateboarding became his main focus. He loved it so much that he even left high school early to spend all his time on his skateboarding career.
Becoming a Pro Skater
In 2009, when Ishod was 18, he went to a big amateur skateboarding contest called the Tampa Am in Tampa, Florida. He placed 18th, which was pretty good! Even though he didn't make it to the finals, he handed out DVDs of his skating to potential sponsors. This helped kickstart his career.
After the Tampa Am, a company called Real Skateboards started giving Ishod free skateboards. They liked his style so much that in 2011, they officially made him a professional skateboarder. This was a huge step for him!
Awards and Signature Shoes
In 2013, a famous skateboarding magazine called Thrasher named Ishod their Skater of the Year. This is a really big honor in skateboarding. He earned it by releasing four awesome video parts that year.
Ishod continued to shine. In 2015, he competed in his first Super Crown event. He finished second, beating many other top pros. In 2016, he got his very own signature shoe with Nike. It was called the SB Dunk Low Pro "Ishod Wair." Since then, he has released even more signature shoes. In early 2022, Nike released a special new shoe just for him, the Nike SB Ishod Wair.
Ishod Wair in Street League Skateboarding
Competing at the Top Level
Ishod Wair joined Street League Skateboarding (SLS) in 2012. SLS is a major competition series where the best street skateboarders compete. Since joining, Ishod has shown off his skills many times.
He has made seven "9 Club" appearances. This means he landed tricks that scored 9 points or higher, which is very difficult! He has also made it to the finals four times in SLS events.
Ishod's Best Year in SLS
Ishod's best year in Street League Skateboarding was 2014. He finished second at the first-ever Pro Open event. This was his highest placement in an SLS contest at that time. He kept up his great performance throughout 2014. He made it to the Super Crown World Championship and finished in third place.
