Isidoro Diéguez Dueñas (born January 19, 1909 – died January 21, 1942) was a Spanish bricklayer. He became a member of the Spanish Communist Party and fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). After the war, he had to leave Spain. Later, when he returned from Mexico to Portugal, the police arrested him. He was then given to the Spanish authorities, who executed him.
Early Life and the Civil War
Isidoro Diéguez Dueñas was born in Puertollano, Spain, on January 19, 1909. When he was 15, in 1924, he joined the Union of Bricklayers in Madrid. In 1932, he became a member of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE).
During the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, Isidoro Diéguez fought on the side of the government. He was involved in battles at places like Somosierra and Guadarrama. He also worked at important military headquarters.
He quickly became a leader in the Communist Party. He was head of the PCE's committee in Madrid and joined the party's main committee in 1937. By 1938, he was part of the Politburo, which is a very important group that makes big decisions for the party.
In December 1936, the Madrid Defense Council was set up to protect the city. Isidoro Diéguez was chosen to be the Militias delegate in this council. Other important members included Santiago Carrillo and Pablo Yagüe.
Life in Exile
In March 1939, near the end of the Civil War, a leader named Segismundo Casado started a revolt against the Communists in Madrid. Isidoro Diéguez helped organize resistance against this uprising.
After Casado's revolt succeeded, Diéguez managed to escape. He went to Valencia and then took a ship to France. From France, he traveled to America in August 1939, first arriving in New York City. By September 1939, he had reached Mexico.
Return to Spain and Death
In the spring of 1941, Isidoro Diéguez was given an important task: to help guide the Communist Party's plans back in Spain. He sailed on a Portuguese ship called the Gaza, using fake documents, and arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, in mid-June. Other Spanish Communists were also in Lisbon around this time.
However, in September 1941, some other activists were arrested in Madrid. This led to more arrests in Vigo, Spain. These arrests then led to the capture of the Spanish Communist group in Lisbon by the police of the Salazar government in Portugal.
Isidoro Diéguez and his group were arrested in September 1941. They were handed over to the Spanish authorities in October 1941. They were questioned and then put in Porlier prison in Madrid.
On January 19, 1942, they faced a military trial. Six people from the group, including Isidoro Diéguez Dueñas, were sentenced to death. He was executed by a firing squad in Madrid on the morning of January 21, 1942. He was 33 years old.
