Career in Technology
Isis Anchalee was born in 1993. She became interested in technology and taught herself how to write computer code in 2013.
She has worked as a software engineer for several technology companies, including OneLogin, Uber, and Hustle. As an engineer, she helped build and improve the products these companies offer.
Anchalee is also a member of the Advisory Board for Women Who Code, an organization that supports women in technology careers. She has given talks at major tech events to share her experiences and ideas.
The #ilooklikeanengineer Movement
In 2015, Anchalee became the face of a movement that changed how people think about engineers.
Why She Started the Hashtag
The company OneLogin, where Anchalee worked, used her picture in an advertisement. Some people online made negative comments, suggesting she did not look like a "real" engineer.
In response, Anchalee wrote about her experience and started the hashtag #ilooklikeanengineer. She wanted to show that people of all genders and backgrounds can be engineers. She felt that many people have outdated ideas about what an engineer should look like.
How the Hashtag Spread
The hashtag quickly became very popular on social media. In just two months, it was used in over 19,000 original posts and shared almost 30,000 times. Within a year, more than 250,000 people had used #ilooklikeanengineer to share their own pictures and stories.
Famous people like Chelsea Clinton and Emma Watson supported her message. The movement helped raise awareness about the importance of equality and diversity in science and technology. It also inspired similar hashtags for other jobs, like #ilooklikeasurgeon.
Facebook Account Issue
At one point, Anchalee's Facebook account was shut down. This happened because her first name, Isis, was the same as the name of a group that was in the news. After she explained the situation to Facebook, her account was turned back on.
