History of Iskandar Puteri
Early Beginnings: Sempit Puteri
Long ago, the area where Iskandar Puteri now stands was mostly small fishing villages. Malay people and Orang Laut tribes lived here. The area was known as Sempit Puteri, which means "narrow princess". This name came from its location facing the narrowest part of the Tebrau Strait.
In 1855, Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim became the ruler of Johor. He moved the capital from Singapore to Tanjung Puteri. He then renamed it Iskandar Puteri. Later, his son, Maharaja Abu Bakar, became the first Sultan of Modern Johor. In 1868, he renamed Tanjung Puteri to Johor Bahru. This was to show that his family was different from the old Sultanate of Johor.
An interesting story tells us how another nearby place got its name. Jaafar Muhammad, the first chief minister of Johor, was on a boat trip. His boat paddle broke. This event led to the area being called Gelang Patah, meaning "broken paddle".
Over time, many small local councils managed the area. In 1978, these councils merged. They formed the Central Johor Bahru District Council. This council looked after the western and northern parts of Johor Bahru. In 2001, it became a municipal council.
The Nusajaya Era
In 1993, a plan for a second bridge to Singapore came up. The first bridge, the Johor Causeway, was very crowded. This new bridge would connect Malaysia and Singapore. It linked Iskandar Puteri to Tuas in Singapore.
A company called UEM Group started developing a new township. They called it Nusajaya. The name Nusajaya was given by Muhyiddin Yassin, a former chief minister of Johor.
A new government center, Kota Iskandar, was built in Nusajaya. It was designed like the federal government center in Putrajaya. This helped Nusajaya grow. Other big projects followed. These included Legoland Malaysia Resort, Puteri Harbour, and industrial areas. A new city called Medini was also developed.
Renaming to Iskandar Puteri
In January 2016, Sultan Ibrahim, the current Sultan of Johor, renamed Nusajaya. It was once again called Iskandar Puteri. On November 22, 2017, the Johor Bahru Tengah Municipal Council became the Iskandar Puteri City Council. This was a big step for the city.
