Early Life and Education
Tunku Ibrahim was born on November 22, 1958, in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. He was the third child and first son of Sultan Iskandar. His mother was Josephine Ruby Trevorrow, an English woman.
He finished his high school education at Trinity Grammar School in Sydney, Australia, from 1968 to 1970. After school, he received military training in Malaysia at the Army Training Centre. He also trained in the United States, at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Crown Prince of Johor (1981–2010)
Sultan Ibrahim was named the Crown Prince of Johor on July 3, 1981. He lived mainly at the Istana Pasir Pelangi palace. He served as the regent of Johor from 1984 to 1989. This was when his father was serving as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia).
As he grew older, Sultan Ibrahim started taking on more state duties. He represented his father at important meetings, like the Conference of Rulers.
Sultan of Johor (2010–2024)
On January 22, 2010, Tunku Ibrahim was appointed as the Regent of Johor. This happened just hours before his father, Sultan Iskandar, passed away. Sultan Iskandar died that same night. Tunku Ibrahim then became the Sultan of Johor the next morning.
The Chief Minister of Johor announced a 40-day mourning period for the royal family. During this time, Sultan Ibrahim attended his first Conference of Rulers as the new Sultan of Johor.
Special Events as Sultan
On June 30, 2011, Sultan Ibrahim drove the last train from Tanjong Pagar railway station in Singapore. He learned how to drive the train just for this event. He wanted to do this because his grandfather had opened the causeway between Singapore and Malaya in 1923.
On February 5, 2012, Sultan Ibrahim declared Muar as Johor's new royal capital. This replaced Johor Bahru. This announcement happened during the Maulidur Rasul celebrations.
Sultan Ibrahim celebrated his birthday in Muar on November 22, 2012. He chose Muar because it is rich in history and tradition. He asked the state government to protect the old buildings in Muar as heritage sites. He also wanted the Muar River to be kept clean.
Weekend Changes
Johor, like some other Malaysian states, used to have its weekend on Fridays and Saturdays. This was different from most other states that had weekends on Saturdays and Sundays. On January 1, 1994, Johor changed its weekend to Saturday and Sunday. This was to match Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, as Johor was becoming more industrial.
However, on November 22, 2013, Sultan Ibrahim announced another change. He decreed that Johor would move its weekend back to Friday and Saturday. This change took effect on January 1, 2014. The reason was to allow Muslims in the state to attend their Friday prayers more easily. This change caused some issues, especially for businesses dealing with Singapore. However, private businesses in Johor still usually have their weekends on Saturdays and Sundays.
Coronation and Other Decrees
Sultan Ibrahim was officially crowned as the Sultan of Johor on March 23, 2015. The last time a Sultan of Johor was crowned was in 1960. Since 2015, March 23 has been a public holiday in Johor, celebrating the Sultan's official birthday. His actual birthday on November 22 is no longer a public holiday.
In August 2015, Sultan Ibrahim ordered some district names to be changed back or renamed. For example, Kulaijaya district became Kulai again. Nusajaya was renamed Iskandar Puteri, and Ledang District became Tangkak District.
Sultan Ibrahim also banned vaping in Johor starting January 1, 2016. This ban was put in place to protect the health of the people in Johor. Other states like Kelantan and Terengganu followed this ban later.
In January 2016, Sultan Ibrahim made a rule about business signboards. He said they should not be too large, to keep people safe and make the area look better.
Sultan Ibrahim is known for supporting religious moderation. He has also promoted good education in Johor. On January 6, 2024, he announced that he would not hold any public meetings until he became the King of Malaysia on January 31, 2024. He wanted to spend time with his family before taking on his new role.
King of Malaysia (2024–Present)
On October 27, 2023, the Conference of Rulers chose Sultan Ibrahim to be the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia). He took over from Sultan Abdullah of Pahang. At the same time, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak was chosen to be the Deputy King for a third term.
Sultan Ibrahim was officially sworn in as King and moved into the Istana Negara (National Palace) on January 31, 2024.
