Ibrahim ibni Iskandar (Jawi: إبراهيم ابن إسکندر; born Tunku Ibrahim Ismail ibni Tunku Mahmood Iskandar, 22 November 1958) is the King of Malaysia and the fifth Sultan of modern Johor.

He was born when his great-grandfather, Sultan Sir Ibrahim, was still ruling. He became the next in line to the throne when his father, Sultan Iskandar, became the Sultan of Johor in 1981. He was named Crown Prince of Johor on 3 July 1981.

Ibrahim studied at Trinity Grammar School in Australia. In 1982, he married Raja Zarith Sofiah. They have six children, including Ismail Idris and Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Ibrahim became the Sultan of Johor after his father passed away in 2010. On 31 January 2024, Ibrahim was sworn in as the 17th King of Malaysia. He was chosen for a five-year term on 27 October 2023. A special ceremony for his installation as King took place in July 2024.

Early Life and Education

Tunku Ibrahim was born on 22 November 1958 at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru. He was the third child and first son of Sultan Iskandar and his first wife, Josephine Ruby Trevorrow.

He completed his secondary education at Trinity Grammar School in Sydney, Australia, from 1968 to 1970. After school, he received basic military training at the Army Training Centre (PULADA) in Kota Tinggi. He also trained in the United States at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Becoming Crown Prince

Ibrahim became second in line to the throne after his father. He was officially named the Crown Prince of Johor on 3 July 1981. Since then, he has mainly lived at the Istana Pasir Pelangi.

He served as the regent of Johor from 1984 to 1989. This happened when his father was serving as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which is the King of Malaysia. In recent years, Ibrahim took on more state duties as his father grew older. For example, he represented his father at the Conference of Rulers.

Reign as Sultan of Johor

Starting as Regent

Just hours before his father passed away on 22 January 2010, Tunku Ibrahim was appointed as the Regent of Johor. This was because medical reports showed that Sultan Iskandar was very ill. Sultan Iskandar died that same night, and Tunku Ibrahim became the Sultan of Johor the next morning.

The Chief Minister of Johor, Abdul Ghani Othman, announced that Sultan Ibrahim and his family would observe a 40-day mourning period. During this time, Sultan Ibrahim attended his first Conference of Rulers as the new Sultan of Johor.

Driving the Last Train

On 30 June 2011, Sultan Ibrahim drove the last train from Tanjong Pagar railway station in Singapore. He had learned how to drive the train from a special instructor. He wanted to do this because his grandfather, Sultan Ismail, had opened the causeway between Singapore and Malaya in 1923. He felt it was fitting for him to drive the last train out of the station.

Changes in Johor

Sultan Ibrahim declared Muar as Johor's new royal capital on 5 February 2012. This replaced Johor Bahru. This announcement happened during the Maulidur Rasul celebrations.

On 22 November 2012, Sultan Ibrahim celebrated his birthday in Muar. He chose Muar because it is "rich in history and tradition, besides being peaceful, beautiful and progressive." He asked the state government to protect all the old buildings in Muar as heritage sites. He also wanted the local authorities to keep the Muar River clean.

Johor, like some other Malaysian states, used to have its weekend on Fridays and Saturdays. This was different from most other states that had weekends on Saturdays and Sundays. On 22 November 2013, Sultan Ibrahim announced that Johor would change its weekend back to Friday and Saturday, starting 1 January 2014. This was to allow Muslims in the state to attend their Friday prayers easily. This change caused some adjustments, especially for businesses that worked with Singapore.

Coronation and Other Decrees

Sultan Ibrahim was officially crowned as the Sultan of Johor on 23 March 2015. The last time a Sultan of Johor was crowned was his grandfather, Sultan Ismail, in 1960. From 2015 onwards, 23 March became an annual public holiday in Johor, replacing the Sultan's actual birthday on 22 November.

In August 2015, Sultan Ibrahim ordered that the name of Kulaijaya district be changed back to Kulai. He also decreed that Nusajaya be renamed Iskandar Puteri, and Ledang District be renamed Tangkak District.

Sultan Ibrahim also issued a rule banning vaping in Johor from 1 January 2016. This ban was put in place to protect the health of the people in Johor. Other states like Kelantan and Terengganu followed this ban soon after.

In January 2016, Sultan Ibrahim made a rule that business signboards should not be too large. This was to keep the public safe and make the town look better.

Sultan Johor is known for supporting religious moderation. He has also promoted good quality education for Johor. On 6 January 2024, Sultan Ibrahim announced that he would not meet with people until he became the King of Malaysia on 31 January 2024. He wanted to spend time with his family before taking on his new role.

Reign as King of Malaysia

On 27 October 2023, the Conference of Rulers chose Sultan Ibrahim to be the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia). He replaced Sultan Abdullah of Pahang. At the same time, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak was chosen as the Deputy King for a third term.

Sultan Ibrahim officially took his oath and moved into the Istana Negara (National Palace) on 31 January 2024.

His official Ceremonial Installation as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong happened at the Throne Hall of the Istana Negara on 20 July 2024. This ceremony included traditional Malay customs and was attended by many important national leaders.
