The Isla de Pascua Department, also known as the Easter Island Department, was a special part of Chile for a short time. It was like a local government area. This department included the famous Easter Island (Rapa Nui) and the smaller Isla Salas y Gómez island. It was part of the old Valparaíso Province before Chile changed how its regions were organized in 1974.
History of the Department
This department was created by a special law, Law No. 16.441. The president at the time, Eduardo Frei Montalva, signed it into effect. It officially started on March 1, 1966. This was when the law was published in the Diario Oficial de la República de Chile, which is like the official newspaper for government rules.
The main town of Hanga Roa was chosen as the capital of this new department. The department covered all of Easter Island and the nearby Isla Salas y Gómez. It had only one main area for local government, called the Isla de Pascua commune. This commune was then divided into three smaller sections called districts.
The law also said that when people voted for members of the Chamber of Deputies (a part of Chile's government), the Easter Island Department would be grouped with the Valparaíso and Quillota areas. A local council, called a municipality, was also set up for the commune. The president chose seven people to be part of this council. Their time in office ended in May 1967. A local court was also created to handle legal matters.
How the Department Was Run
The local government for the Easter Island Department was located in Hanga Roa. This is where the main offices for running the department were found.
