A Look Back: Station History
The First Station (1987)
The very first Island Gardens DLR station opened its doors on 31 August 1987. It was the last stop on the DLR line back then. This station was built high up, like a bridge, and had two platforms for trains. It was also near where an old train station, North Greenwich railway station, used to be.
Building a New Station
Later, the DLR line needed to go even further south to Lewisham. To do this, the trains had to travel under the River Thames in a deep tunnel. Because of this big change, a brand new Island Gardens station was needed.
The new station was built underground and a bit further from the river. The original station, which was above ground, was taken down. The old tracks leading to it were also removed.
