It focuses on how three local families and four German officers lived during this time. The show uses a made-up island called St. Gregory, but its story is based on real events from the islands of Guernsey and Jersey.
The series was made by Granada Television in Manchester. It had a big budget of about £9 million. Filming happened on the Isle of Man from August to October 2003. When the show was first shown in the UK, it had six episodes, each about 70 minutes long.

Why There Was No Second Series
Even though Island at War was very popular when it first aired, the series ended suddenly. The writer, Stephen Mallatratt, sadly passed away from cancer shortly after the show was broadcast. Also, the show was very expensive to make, with each episode costing about £1 million. These reasons led to the series ending after just one season.
