The Island of Ponds is a small island located off the eastern coast of Labrador. Labrador is a part of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada.

The island sits to the south of the Labrador mainland. A water channel called Domino Run separates it from Spotted Island to the north. The only town left on the island is Black Tickle. A ferry connects the island to the mainland during certain times of the year.

Geography of the Island of Ponds

The Island of Ponds gets its name from the many small, shallow ponds found there. There are 366 of these ponds!

The island is mostly made of igneous rock. This type of rock forms when hot, melted rock (magma or lava) cools and hardens. It has only a thin layer of soil on top. This soil isn't deep enough for large trees to grow. Even with so many ponds, finding clean drinking water has been a challenge for the people living on the island for a long time.

Life on the Island

About 200 people live on the Island of Ponds, based on numbers from 2007. Many of the residents are Métis people. The main community, Black Tickle, relies on the seasonal ferry for supplies and travel to the mainland.
