The Journey of the Rhodes Jews
The Sephardic Jews of Rhodes have a long history. They were originally from Spain. In 1492, the King and Queen of Spain forced all Jews to leave their country. This happened on the same night Christopher Columbus sailed.
Many Sephardic refugees found new homes around the Mediterranean. A large group chose the beautiful island of Rhodes. It was a lovely place with almond and lemon trees. The air often smelled of roses.
For hundreds of years, the Jews of Rhodes lived peacefully. They were under the rule of the Ottoman-Turkish government. They kept their unique form of the Ladino language. This language came with them from Spain. They also practiced their special Sephardic traditions.
However, in 1944, Germany invaded the quiet island. Many Rhodes Jews were tragically sent away during World War II. They faced great danger and loss.
A New Home in Los Angeles
The Mediterranean island of Rhodes once had many Jewish people. Today, only a few still live there. Many of those who survived World War II moved to Los Angeles. The warm weather and sunny beaches there reminded them of their home.
The film Island of Roses won the Silver Screen Award in 1995. This was at the US International Film and Video Festival.
