Isleta Village Proper, also known simply as Isleta, is a special community in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA. It is called a "census-designated place" (CDP) because the government counts its population, but it is not an officially incorporated city or town.
In 2010, about 491 people lived there. By 2020, the population grew to 802 people. Isleta Village Proper is part of the larger Albuquerque area.
Location and Landscape
Isleta Village Proper is located in New Mexico. It covers a total area of about 1.89 square kilometers (0.73 square miles). All of this area is land.
The village sits in the Rio Grande Valley. This valley is part of the Albuquerque Basin. Isleta is on the west side of the Rio Grande river. When the river's water level is low, special dams nearby can redirect the water. These dams help manage the river's flow for a long stretch.
Who Lives in Isleta?
The population of Isleta Village Proper was 802 people in 2020. Most of the people living here are Native American. In 2000, about 98% of the residents identified as Native American. A small number of people were White, Asian, or from other backgrounds. About 4% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
In 2000, there were 190 households in the village. About 31% of these households had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about 2.6 people.
Learning and Schools
Children in Isleta Village Proper attend schools run by Albuquerque Public Schools.
There is also a school specifically for Native American students called Isleta Elementary School. This school is managed by the Bureau of Indian Education. The current school building opened in 2006.
The community also has its own public library, called the Isleta Pueblo Library.
Isleta in Movies
Isleta Village Proper has even been a filming location! In 1912, a famous director named D. W. Griffith made a movie here. The film was called "A Pueblo Legend" and starred Mary Pickford.
