Discovering Islington's Past
How the Museum Started
The Islington Museum first opened its doors in May 2008. It was made possible thanks to a big grant of £1 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This museum took the place of an older museum that was located at Islington Town Hall.
The museum is owned and run by the Islington Council. You can find it in the basement of the Finsbury Library building.
What You Can See at the Museum
Exploring the Collections
The museum has a main gallery with nine different themes. These themes help you explore the local and social history of Islington. You can learn about:
- Childhood
- Food and drink
- Fashion
- Leisure activities
- Healthcare
- Radicals (people who wanted big changes)
- Caring for others
- Home life
- Wartime experiences
Among the cool items on display, you can see a statue of Vladimir Lenin. He was a famous political leader who lived and worked in Clerkenwell for a time. You can also see some unique book covers that were changed by artists Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell.
Events and Special Shows
Temporary Exhibitions and Activities
The museum often has new temporary exhibitions. These shows might feature items from the museum's own collections or be visiting displays from other places.
The museum also hosts fun talks, guided walks, and special events just for kids. There's even a special education room. This room is used for school trips and other groups who want to learn more about Islington's history.
