Farringdon station is a busy train station in London. It's used by both the London Underground (the Tube) and National Rail trains. You can find it in an area called Clerkenwell, just north of the City of London.

Exciting Changes at Farringdon

Farringdon station is becoming one of the busiest stations in the UK. This is because two major new train lines, Crossrail and the improved Thameslink route, now use it. The station also still has its existing Tube lines.

Thameslink Station Upgrade

Farringdon station has been made much better and bigger. This was done so that longer Thameslink trains can fit. The old station building now has a new roof. There is also a new entrance and waiting area on Turnmill Street.

The train platforms have been made wider and longer. To do this, some pillars under the Cowcross Street bridge had to be moved. The bridge and a building called Cardinal Tower were taken down and rebuilt. Cowcross Street is now a street just for people walking. Lifts have also been added to help everyone get around.

The main ticket hall and waiting area were rebuilt. It's now much easier to change between different train lines inside the station. An old bridge used for changing trains was removed. New stairs and lifts were put in. These new lifts go to all four platforms, making the station easy to use for passengers with disabilities.

The platforms could not be made longer to the north. This was because the Thameslink line is very steep right after the station. So, the platforms were made longer to the south. This change meant that Thameslink trains no longer stop at Barbican and Moorgate stations. However, London Underground trains still go to those stations.

Crossrail Station Development

A new Crossrail station, also called 'Farringdon', has been built. It is located between the Farringdon and Barbican Tube stations. This new station connects with both of them. You can get to the Crossrail part from the new Thameslink ticket hall.
