Exploring Aldgate Station: Lines and Location
Aldgate station is on two important Tube lines. It's a stop on the Circle Line, which goes around central London in a loop. It's also the very last stop, or "eastern terminus," for the Metropolitan line. This means Metropolitan line trains start or end their journeys here.
Understanding Travel Zones
The station is located in Travelcard Zone 1. London's public transport system uses zones to figure out how much your journey costs. Zone 1 is the very center of London, where most famous landmarks and business areas are.
Special Platforms at Aldgate
Aldgate station has four platforms where trains stop. Platforms 1 and 4 are quite special. They are two of only three platforms on the entire London Underground network that are used only by the Circle Line. Usually, Circle Line platforms are shared with other lines like the District or Hammersmith & City lines.
Aldgate in Famous Stories
Aldgate tube station plays a small but important role in a famous detective story.
Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery
The station is mentioned in The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans, a Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the story, a character named Cadogan West is found dead on the tracks near Aldgate station. Later, the clever detective Sherlock Holmes figures out that the body was actually placed on top of the train before it arrived at the station.
