Ismaïl Aissati (born 16 August 1988) is a former professional footballer from Morocco. He played as a midfielder.
Ismaïl was born in Utrecht, Netherlands. His parents were from Morocco. This meant he could choose to play for either the Netherlands or Morocco in international football. He first played for the Netherlands Under-21 team. Later, in 2007, he decided to play for Morocco.
He was first called up to the Moroccan national team in 2009. However, an injury kept him from playing. He finally made his debut for Morocco on 9 October 2011. During his career, he also played on loan for FC Twente in 2007 and Vitesse in 2010-2011. That year, his main club, Ajax, won their 30th league title.
In 2006, when he was only 17, Aissati was part of the UEFA Under-21 Football Championship All-Star team. This was impressive because he was playing against players who were often three or four years older than him.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at PSV
Ismaïl Aissati began playing football at a young age in Utrecht. He joined local clubs like DSO Utrecht and USV Elinkwijk. In 2000, when he was twelve, PSV Eindhoven noticed his talent and he joined their youth academy. He became a professional player for PSV in 2005.
Aissati made his first professional appearance in the Eredivisie (the top Dutch league) on 28 August 2005. PSV won that game against Roda JC. A few months later, on 19 October 2005, he played his first UEFA Champions League match for PSV. He became the youngest Dutch player ever to play in the Champions League at 17 years old. He came on as a substitute against A.C. Milan. In a return match against A.C. Milan on 1 November 2005, he played the entire game.
In January 2006, Aissati signed his first professional contract with PSV, which lasted until 2009. He scored his first professional goal for PSV on 4 February 2006, in a 3–2 win against Roda JC. He scored again on 25 March 2006 against Willem II. In his first season, he played 17 league games and scored two goals.
In the 2006–07 season, Aissati played less due to injuries. He made only 10 appearances and scored one goal. To get more playing time, he was loaned to FC Twente on 16 January 2007 for the rest of the season. He played his first game for Twente on 20 January 2007 against RKC Waalwijk. Eight days later, he scored his first goal for Twente in a 3–1 win over ADO Den Haag. People were very impressed with his performances at Twente. Many saw him as one of the most promising young talents in Dutch football.
Aissati returned to PSV for the 2007–08 season. He played regularly but was not always in the starting team. He made sixteen appearances that season but did not score any goals. In 2008, PSV and Ajax agreed for Aissati to move to Ajax.
Playing for Ajax
On 19 July 2008, Ismaïl Aissati joined AFC Ajax. He was one of only a few players to move directly from PSV to Ajax. He was given the number 11 shirt.
Aissati faced some challenges at Ajax. He suffered a knee injury in September 2008 and was out for several months. He finally made his debut for Ajax on 22 February 2009, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 draw against FC Volendam. He provided assists and scored his first goal for Ajax on 5 April 2009, in a 2–1 win over Roda JC. In his first season, he played nine games and scored once.
During the 2009–10 season, Aissati continued to deal with injuries. He played 14 league games and scored three goals. He scored against Heracles Almelo, Heerenveen, and Vitesse.
For the 2010–11 season, Aissati played two matches for Ajax before going on loan to Vitesse.
Loan to Vitesse
On 24 August 2010, Aissati was loaned to Vitesse for the entire 2010–11 season. He made his Vitesse debut on 29 August 2010. Four weeks later, on 21 September 2010, he scored his first goals for Vitesse in a cup match. Five days later, he scored a great goal in a league match against Excelsior. He scored three more goals against AZ Alkmaar, VVV-Venlo, and Feyenoord.
Aissati was a regular starter for Vitesse as a central midfielder. By the end of the 2010–11 season, he had scored four goals in 29 league matches. Vitesse wanted to buy him permanently, but they could not agree on terms, so Aissati returned to Ajax.
Back at Ajax and Beyond
After his loan at Vitesse, Aissati returned to Ajax. He played for the reserve team, Jong Ajax, for the first three months of the 2011–12 season. He then rejoined the first team. He made his first appearance of the season on 27 November 2011 in a 3–0 win against N.E.C.. On 25 March 2012, he scored a fantastic goal against his former club, PSV, in a 2–0 win. He scored again on 11 April 2012. He finished the season with sixteen appearances and two goals.
His contract with Ajax ended in the summer of 2012. Aissati wanted to leave the club and explore playing in Spain. Ajax offered him a new contract, but they could not agree on the salary. So, Aissati left Ajax.
Moving to Turkey and Russia
After leaving Ajax, Aissati signed with the Turkish club Antalyaspor in August 2012. He made his debut on 27 August 2012. A month later, he scored his first goal for Antalyaspor from a penalty kick. He scored his first league goal on 20 October 2012. He continued to score, including two more league goals and one in the Turkish Cup. In his first season, he played 38 games and scored five goals.
In September 2013, Aissati moved to Russia, signing a three-year contract with FC Terek Grozny. He made his debut on 14 September 2013. He spent most of his first season on the bench but started to settle in Russia. He even learned some of the local language.
In the 2014–15 season, Aissati played more regularly for Terek Grozny. He scored his first goal for the club in a Russian Cup match. He continued to be an important player, making 25 appearances that season. In the 2015–16 season, he scored his first league goal for Terek Grozny on 28 August 2015. He played 31 games that season. In June 2016, Aissati left Terek Grozny.
Later Career in Turkey
In the summer of 2016, Aissati returned to Turkey and joined Alanyaspor. He later signed with Denizlispor in January 2018, after playing for Balıkesirspor. In January 2021, Aissati moved to Adana Demirspor. His contract there ended in March 2021, and he returned to the Netherlands. He then rejoined Denizlispor in 2021 and played there until 2023.
International Career
Playing for Netherlands Youth Teams
Ismaïl Aissati played for the Netherlands at various youth levels, including the Under-15, Under-16, and Under-17 teams. He was part of the team that won the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. In 2007, he also helped the team defend their title at the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship held in the Netherlands.
In the 2007 tournament, Aissati played in the first match against Israel U21. The Netherlands won 1–0. After beating Portugal 2–1, the Dutch team reached the semi-finals and qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics. They then beat England in a long penalty shootout. In the final, the Netherlands won 4–1 against Serbia, keeping their title.
Representing Morocco
In 2007, there were reports that Ismaïl chose to play for the Morocco national team instead of the Netherlands. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation later confirmed this in 2008, though Aissati himself denied it at first.
He was expected to make his debut for Morocco in February 2009, but an injury prevented it. He finally made his debut for Morocco on 10 August 2011, in a 2–0 away victory against Senegal in Dakar.
