Issaqueena Falls is a beautiful waterfall located near Walhalla, South Carolina. This amazing cascade waterfall drops about 100 ft (30 m) (which is like a 10-story building!). You can find it in the Oconee District of the Sumter National Forest, a large protected area.

The Legend of Issaqueena

Issaqueena Falls gets its name from a famous local legend. This story is about a brave Cherokee girl named Issaqueena. She was said to have fallen in love with a man who was not from her tribe. Some versions of the story say he was an Oconee brave. Other versions say he was a white trader named Allan Francis or a silversmith named David Francis.

Issaqueena's Escape

The legend tells that Issaqueena was trying to escape from hostile tribesmen. To get away, she bravely leaped from the top of the waterfall. The story has two main endings. In one version, she and her lover disappear together. In another, more hopeful version, they land safely on a hidden ledge. From there, they escape and live happily ever after. This legend makes the falls a special place with a rich history.

Visiting Issaqueena Falls

Issaqueena Falls is a popular spot for visitors. It's easy to reach because it's part of a park. This park also gives you access to another cool local landmark.

Nearby Stumphouse Tunnel

Just a short distance from the falls, you can explore Stumphouse Tunnel. This historic tunnel was started in the 1850s. It was meant to be part of a railroad that would connect Charleston, South Carolina, to the Midwest. Even though the tunnel was never finished, it's still an impressive sight. You can walk inside the tunnel and feel the cool air.
