Itziar Aretxaga works as a researcher in Mexico. She works at the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE). She loves to study how galaxies form and change. She also looks at very bright centers of galaxies called active galactic nuclei. Her work includes studying areas where many new stars are born (starbursts). She also researches huge star explosions called supernovae.

Becoming an Astrophysicist

Itziar Aretxaga was born in Bilbao, Spain, on November 20, 1965. She has citizenship in both Spain and Mexico. Her family name, Aretxaga, comes from the Basque region. She was the first person in her family to go to a university. Her mother was a dressmaker, and her father taught at a school.

University Studies

She went to the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. In 1988, she earned her first degree in physics. Physics is the study of how the universe works, from tiny particles to giant galaxies.

She continued her studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid. There, she earned a master's degree in physics in 1990. She then completed her PhD in physics in 1993. Her PhD work was about how the bright centers of galaxies change. These changes are caused by new stars forming.

Research Around the World

After her PhD, Itziar Aretxaga became a postdoctoral researcher. This means she did more research after getting her doctorate. She worked in England at the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1993 to 1996. Then, she moved to Germany. She worked at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics from 1996 to 1998.

In 1998, she came to Mexico. She started working at the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE). She became a permanent researcher there in 2004.

Helping Young Astronomers

Since 2018, Itziar Aretxaga has led an important program. It is called the International School for Young Astronomers. This program is part of the International Astronomical Union. It helps young people from all over the world learn about astronomy.

Achievements and Recognition

Itziar Aretxaga is a respected scientist. In 2003, she became a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. This is a special group of top scientists in Mexico.
