Ivan Ivanovich Saenko, born on October 17, 1983, is a former professional footballer from Russia. He was known for playing as a winger, which is a player who runs along the sides of the field.
Playing for Clubs
Ivan Saenko started his football journey in Russia. He later moved to Germany to play for Karlsruher SC from 2001 to 2005. During this time, he also had a short loan spell back in Russia with FC Fakel Voronezh.
After his time at Karlsruher SC, Ivan joined 1. FC Nürnberg in 2005. He played there for three seasons. In August 2008, he decided to move back to Russia. He joined Spartak Moscow because his previous club, 1. FC Nürnberg, had moved down to a lower league.
Ivan faced some challenges during his time at Spartak Moscow. He missed the second half of the 2009 season because of injuries. He retired from professional football in 2011.
Playing for Russia
Ivan Saenko also played for his country, Russia. He first played for the Russia U-21 team. They finished second in their qualifying group for the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
His first call-up to the senior Russian national team was in September 2006. He made his debut a month later, in October 2006, playing against Estonia.
Ivan was part of Russia's team for the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. He came on as a substitute in two matches during the group stage. He started in the quarter-final game against the Netherlands and the semi-final against Spain. He played his last game for Russia in October 2008. Overall, he played 13 matches for the national team.
Achievements
Ivan Saenko achieved some notable successes during his career:
