Career Highlights
Ivar Rooth had a very busy career in finance. He worked for several banks in Sweden when he was younger.
Leading Sweden's Bank
From 1929 to 1948, Rooth was the Governor of the Central Bank of Sweden, called Sveriges Riksbank. This is a very important job, as the central bank manages a country's money supply. He also served as a director for the Bank of International Settlements, which is a bank for central banks.
Leading the IMF
In 1951, Ivar Rooth was chosen to be the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He started this big role on August 3, 1951.
When he first spoke to the countries that were members of the IMF, he talked about making trade easier. He wanted to remove rules that stopped money and goods from moving freely between countries. The IMF then started new ways to help countries borrow money when they needed it. They also began to check in with countries every year to make sure their money rules were fair. Rooth's time as head of the IMF ended in 1956.
Other Important Roles
After his time at the IMF, Rooth continued to work in important financial roles. From 1947 to 1961, he led the Investment Committee for the United Nations Pension Fund. He also headed the Currency Board in Kuwait from 1960 to 1962. After 1962, he retired and lived in Lidingö, Sweden. He sometimes wrote and gave talks about money matters.
