Iver Eriksen Rosenkrantz (born December 5, 1674, died November 13, 1745) was an important Danish politician and a large landowner. He served as a top advisor to the King of Denmark.

Early Life and Education

Iver Rosenkrantz was born at Rosenholm Castle in Hornslet, Denmark. His father, Erik Rosenkrantz, was a nobleman and politician. Iver was only seven years old when his father passed away. His mother, Margaret Krabbe, came from Scania. This area became part of Sweden in 1658.

Iver's grandfather, Iver Krabbe, was a well-known politician and army leader. He even served as governor of Norway for a time. Iver's family moved to Denmark after Scania became Swedish. Iver's uncle, Jørgen Krabbe, was very fond of him. Sadly, Jørgen Krabbe was executed by the Swedes in 1678 during the Scanian War.

Iver received a very good education. In 1691, he went to Copenhagen to study at the Knight Academy. Three years later, he traveled abroad to learn more about the world. He returned to Denmark in 1697. In January 1698, he became a chamberlain (an assistant) to Princess Sophia Hedwig of Denmark.

Becoming a Diplomat

In 1700, King Frederick IV of Denmark sent Iver Rosenkrantz on an important mission. He was to meet with King Charles XII of Sweden. However, the mission was not successful. In 1702, he became a royal advisor.

Later, he served as the Danish ambassador to England. He held this important job from 1702 to 1706, and again from 1710 to 1714. When he returned to Denmark, he was made Secretary of the Board of Trade. This board helped manage Denmark's business and economy.

King Frederick IV started to rely more on his Queen, Anne Sophie Reventlow. Iver Rosenkrantz was critical of some Danish noble families. Because of this, he lost his titles and was sent away from the main government. He became the governor of Viborg. Even though he was no longer in central government, he remained good friends with the King's brothers and sisters.

Serving as a Minister of State

When King Frederick IV died in 1730, the new King, Christian VI of Denmark, immediately called Iver Rosenkrantz back to Copenhagen. This showed how much the new King trusted him.

Iver Rosenkrantz was given the Order of the Elephant, a very high honor in Denmark. He was also put in charge of the two main Danish government offices. During a time when England and France were not getting along, he supported England. He was also known for helping and supporting Copenhagen University.

In 1735, he was removed from his position. This happened after he disagreed with the King about how Denmark should handle its relationships with other countries.

Personal Life and Family

Iver Rosenkrantz was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in June 1713. This is a group of very smart scientists and thinkers in England.

He was married two times. In 1702, he married Birgitte Gersdorff. She was the daughter of Frederik Gersdorff, a Chief Master of Ceremonies. In 1721, he married Charlotte Amalie Skeel (1700-63). She was the daughter of Christen Skeel, a high-ranking official.

Iver Rosenkrantz and Charlotte Amalie Skeel had six children together. One of their children was Frederik Christian Rosenkrantz (1724-1802), who also became an important figure. Iver Rosenkrantz passed away in 1745 at Rosenholm Castle. He was buried at Hornslet Church.
