St. Austin's Priory: A Home for Monks
A priory is a type of monastery, which is a place where monks or nuns live and worship. St. Austin's Priory was a "monastic house." This means it was a building used by a religious community.
New Beginnings in England
In 1932, a group of monks called the Order of Augustinian Recollects moved to Devon. They came from Spain because of difficult times there. People were against religious groups, which is called "anti-clericalism."
The monks bought the priory from another religious group. These were the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. They had also moved to England earlier because of similar problems in France. By 1932, the Sisters could safely return to France.
Training Missionaries
During the 20th century, St. Austin's Priory became an important place. It was used to educate and train missionaries. Missionaries are people who travel to different places to share their religious beliefs.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, the priory became smaller. In 1981, some of its buildings were taken down. Eventually, in 2016, it stopped being a home for monks. The priory then became part of the Diocese of Plymouth. A diocese is a large area managed by a bishop in the Catholic Church.
