Early Life and School
Iwan Rheon was born in Carmarthen, Wales, on 13 May 1985. When he was five years old, his family moved to Cardiff. His older brother, Aled, is also a musician. They even performed a song together called "Rhodd" in 2015.
Iwan went to a Welsh-speaking school called Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. He started acting in school plays when he was 17. A talent scout noticed him at a big Welsh festival called the National Eisteddfod of Wales.
Acting Career
When he was 17, Iwan joined a Welsh TV soap opera called Pobol Y Cwm. He played a character named Macsen White. Later, he left the show to study acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
His first important role on stage was in a musical called Spring Awakening. He played the character Moritz Stiefel in London. For this role, he won an award called the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical in 2010. This is a very important award for theatre in the UK.
After Spring Awakening, Iwan got a role in the TV show Misfits. He played Simon Bellamy, a shy character who gains superpowers. He left the show in 2011.
In 2013, Iwan Rheon was cast as the evil Ramsay Bolton in the HBO series Game of Thrones. This role made him very well-known. Interestingly, he had auditioned for the role of Jon Snow in the same show, but Kit Harington got that part. Iwan and Kit are good friends. Iwan also played Ash Weston in the TV comedy Vicious from 2013 to 2016.
He also appeared in the BBC show Our Girl in 2014. In 2017, he was in the Marvel TV series Inhumans. In 2019, he played the famous guitarist Mick Mars from the band Mötley Crüe in the movie The Dirt.
Music Career
Iwan Rheon has been writing songs and singing since he was 16. He used to be the lead singer of a band called The Convictions. He left the band to focus on his acting.
In 2010, he released his first solo music, an EP (which is like a mini-album) called Tongue Tied EP. An EP usually has fewer songs than a full album. He released another EP, Changing Times, in 2011, and Bang! Bang! in 2013.
His first full album, called Dinard, came out in April 2015. He recorded it in London and Wales. The album has folk-pop songs that he wrote himself. The title "Dinard" comes from a town in France where he met his girlfriend at the time.
Personal Life
Iwan Rheon speaks both Welsh and English fluently, with Welsh being his first language. He lives in London and has a son, who was born in August 2018, with Zoë Grisedale.
