Izakaya facts for kids
An izakaya (居酒屋) is a type of bar in Japan where many people go to drink and have snacks. Unlike bars or pubs which are western-style, izakayas are Japanese-style and sell things like beer, chūhai and sake, and have a bigger variety of foods than bars and pubs.
History
Izakayas started in the Edo period. Before the Meiji period, people drank liquor while standing. Some izakayas used sake barrels as seats for customers.
