His Early Life and Studies
Józef Kremer was born in Kraków, Poland, in 1806. He studied in many famous cities across Europe, including Kraków, Berlin, Heidelberg, and Paris. These studies helped him learn a lot about different ideas and cultures.
A Professor and Leader
Kremer became a professor of philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He started as an assistant professor in 1847 and became a full professor in 1850. He later became the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in 1865. The highest position he reached at the university was rector, which is like being the head of the whole university, in the academic year 1870–71.
He was also a founding member of the Polish Academy of Learning in 1872. This was a very important group of smart people in Poland. Kremer also taught art history and aesthetics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
His Famous Writings
Józef Kremer was one of the first people in Poland to follow the ideas of Hegelianism, a way of thinking from a famous German philosopher named Hegel. In 1843, he published the first part of his book Listy z Krakowa (Letters from Kraków). This book was about art and beauty, and it made him well-known. He also wrote Wykład systematyczny filozofii (A Systematic Course of Philosophy), which was one of the first complete philosophy textbooks in Poland during the 1800s.
But what really made Kremer famous was his book Podróż do Włoch (Journey to Italy). This book, published between 1859 and 1864, quickly became a classic in Polish literature. Parts of it were even put into school textbooks! Later, all of Kremer's works were collected and published in a twelve-volume set. This was a huge honor, and no other Polish philosopher of his time had such a complete collection of their writings published.
His Ideas on the Mind
In psychology, Józef Kremer had an important idea. He was one of the first to clearly separate how our minds work into two parts: what we are aware of (conscious) and what we are not aware of (unconscious). He believed that studying how these two parts interact could help us understand people better. He also thought that a person's actions were the best way to learn about them.
